Magic realismMagic realism Is a literary and an artistic genre that confronts us with a fascinating clash between stark realism and ludicrous fantasy.
I’m not particularly interested in the theories behind magic realism.
This is an entirely practical workshop designed to enable us to try things out for ourselves rather than talking about them.
It’s an exploration of the ways and means of generating magic realism in the context of making something from nothing.
For a sequence to be seen as ‘magic realism’ what should we be looking for?
What does this uneasy balance of reality and fantasy have on the emotional flow and logic of the situation?
If we’re any good, there’ll be many more questions by the end of the day but the task dealing with those two is enough to enable us to see how magic realism works in practice.
It’s a conflicting and unconventional style that becomes liberating and empowering once we can accept the vast range of feeling we’re working with.
