Overview

___

As part of the MadeBack festival, Raffaella Zurlo presents Patching Identities, a hands-on workshop exploring the creation of removable modular applications as a way to transform second-hand garments through sustainable refashion and poetic storytelling.

After a short theoretical introduction to contemporary upcycling practices and the aesthetic value of repair, each participant uses quick sketches to design their own textile talisman, starting from a word, a phrase, or a message dedicated to a stranger.

This design is then turned into a large patch using manual techniques such as embroidery, hand-sewing, assembly, and layering of vintage fabrics and reclaimed materials. In the final stage, the application is attached to the garment using reversible systems (safety pins, buttons, or magnets), extending the design directly onto the garment with small coordinated details.

The process combines needle, thread, and material experimentation: slow hand-making and improvisation become a narrative tool capable of altering the garment's identity without erasing its history. This reversible approach transforms the clothing into an open, changing surface, allowing the patch to be removed, moved, and transferred to another garment in the future.

The process doesn't end when the workshop does. In line with the MadeBack approach, the twelve transformed garments will become part of the festival's Swap Market (15–16–17 Oct), ready to be passed on to someone else and allowing each talisman to meet a new owner.

A hands-on, creative experience open to everyone, with no previous experience needed, to experiment with circular fashion through creative reuse and reflect, through making, on the deep connection between identity, memory, and clothing.

🛠️ What's included

Provided by the staff: second-hand garments from the archive, basic sewing supplies (scissors, pins, needles, embroidery threads), wooden embroidery hoops, buttons, safety pins, magnets, and reclaimed textile materials (including linen, cotton, vintage lace, and neon yellow tulle).

No advanced technical skills are required; only an interest in hands-on practices and creativity is recommended.

Raffaella Zurlo works across contemporary art, upcycling, creative education, and the promotion of manual craftsmanship. As a textile artist, designer, and cultural heritage conservator specialized in metals and organic materials, her research focuses on the boundary between wound and care, memory and rebirth, object and identity.

Thread, stitching, fabric, and reclaimed materials become languages to question the value of objects and the possibility of a second life, viewing repair not just as a technical intervention, but as a poetic and political gesture.

The workshop is part of the MadeBack festival, an initiative by the Fashion & Textile Living Lab of the Department of Design at Politecnico di Milano, dedicated to research and experimentation around transformation and reuse in the fashion system.
