About this Event

Panel Discussion: Agricultural, Energy and Supply Chain Resilience – unrecognised threats from within?

It is reasonable to assume that Australia is one of the wealthiest nations and a global leader in digging it up and shipping it out. We hold some of the world’s largest reserves of minerals, rare earths and gas, all easily accessible compared to other sources. Our agricultural sector has fuelled the economy since before Federation and continues to do so.

If technology innovation was an Olympic Event, we would be among the leaders, however, if commercialisation of Sovereign innovation was seen similarly, it would see us barely being noticed.

We are indeed “The Lucky Country” but has an embarrassment of riches and global stability provided an unexpected and unwanted dividend?

  • Our domestic logistics and agricultural sectors are optimised for stability - what happens when even minor disruptions occur?
  • Our fuel and energy security should be strong, but are they?
  • Our farmers are some of the most productive in the world, despite a lack of government support. Are we paying attention to the impact of disruption?
  • We have assumed freedom of navigation in the Malacca Strait, South China Sea, Coral and Tasman Seas. As an Island National they are critical to our welfare. What are the consequences of trade restriction in one and perhaps all of these essential sea lanes.

As we watch 70 years of existing norms for economic prosperity, based on written and unwritten but well understood rules evaporate in 10% of that time, is it time to act?

Our guest speakers:

  • AVM (Ret'd) John Blackburn, AO is a former Deputy Chief of Air Force and one of Australia’s pre-eminent consultants in Defence and National Security.
  • Mr Andrew Henderson is a leading strategic policy specialist with a passion for building the sustainability and prosperity of rural and regional Australia, and enhancing the recognition of its role in the economy and its place in national security.
  • Moderator Dr Russell Boyce FAIAA is recognised for his ability to deliver strategic transformation and build high-performance team cultures.

Who was Lysle Roberts?

Lysle Roberts was a Spitfire pilot who flew with RAAF 457 Squadron in the defence of Australia during the Second World War. He and many of his colleagues continued to contribute to our nation after their wartime service as members of the Australian Spitfire Association. The contribution was most visible in formation of the Spitfire Memorial Defence Fellowship (SMDF) during 1998. Lysle’s passion for the SMDF endured until his death in 2019. Today the Spitfire Association continues this contribution and allocates a Fellowship each year for development of step-change innovations related to the security of our nation.
