British-Portuguese pianist Nuno Lucas is establishing an international profile with performances across Portugal and the United Kingdom. His musical journey began in his native Portugal at the age of eight, when he started piano studies with João Rosa at the Academia de Música de Lagos. A year later, he took up the flute with Maria João Cerol, an instrument that has remained a close companion, enriching and complementing his developing dedication to the piano. Now a prize-winner in multiple national and international competitions, he is building a reputation for engaging and colourful performances both as a soloist and chamber musician.

Nuno has performed widely across the United Kingdom, Portugal, and Italy. He has also appeared at several European music festivals, including Kaunas Piano Fest, Semana Internacional de Piano de Óbidos (SIPO), and the Verão Clássico Festival and Academy. Notable performances include Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Royal Welsh College Symphony Orchestra at St. David’s Hall, conducted by David Jones.

Nuno has won prizes over fifteen national and international piano competitions, including the Norah Sande Award, Concurso de Piano de Oeiras, International Competition Cidade do Fundão, Concurso Internacional de Música Cidade de Almada, IX Prémio Nacional Elisa de Sousa Pedroso, and the 20th National Estoril Competition. During his undergraduate studies at the Royal Welsh College of Music, he was awarded all internal competition prizes for solo piano performance within the Keyboard Department, as well as the College’s annual Concerto Competition. Upon graduation, Nuno received the Trevor Pugsley Prize for Piano, recognising his outstanding piano performance throughout his studies at the RWCMD.

Nuno graduated with First-Class Honours in a Bachelor of Music degree from the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, studying with Michael Young and Benjamin Frith, before earning a Master of Music degree with Distinction from the Royal College of Music, London, under the guidance of renowned pianist Leon McCawley. His studies were kindly supported by the Countess of Munster Musical Trust and Talent Unlimited UK. Throughout his training, Nuno also participated in masterclasses with artists including Angela Hewitt, Katia and Marielle Labèque, Stephen Hough, Boris Berman, Tamara Stefanovich, Peter Jablonski, Artur Pizarro, Paul Badura-Skoda, Aaron Schorr, and Aleksandra Zvirblyte.

Currently, Nuno is a PhD candidate in Musicology at the Royal College of Music, supported by a Doctoral Studentship from the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P. (FCT). His doctoral research sits at the intersection of musicology and practice-led scholarship, examining the textural relationships between pianistic and orchestral writing in the piano music of Sergei Prokofiev, with a particular focus on timbre and orchestration. His research is supervised by Dr Christina Guillaumier, Professor Robert Adlington, Paul Robinson, and Dina Parakhina.
