Surrealism is born from the dreamlike canvas of thought. From this comes a powerful self-expression that has granted many generations of women their voice. Artist Colleen Francis Smith, assistant professor of studio art at Lincoln University, uncovers the mysterious and beautiful world of Surrealism and magical realism in her upcoming LU-MRRL Lecture Series talk, “Surrealism and Feminine Rebellion.” In her presentation, she will discuss how Surrealist artists such as Leonora Carrington and Dorothea Tanning have paved their own paths out of stifling gender norms and patriarchal oppression. All are welcome to attend and learn something new! This event will be at the Missouri River Regional Library ( 214 Adams Street, Jefferson City, MO 65109 ) and take place on March 11th, 2026, from 6:30-8pm.
