Join the 𝐋𝐨𝐮𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐚 𝐏𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐜 𝐎𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚 for Concierto en Tango, an evening where the musical landscapes of South America and Spain meet.
The program begins with 𝐀𝐥𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐨 𝐆𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚'𝐬 𝑷𝒂𝒎𝒑𝒆𝒂𝒏𝒂 𝑵𝒐. 𝟑, a symphonic pastoral shaped by the vastness of the Argentine plains. Ginastera, one of Argentina's most important composers of the 20th century, drew deeply from the country's folk music. In Pampeana No. 3, expansive orchestral writing captures both the grandeur and solitude of the pampas. The shifting textures and rhythmic vitality suggest a landscape that is never entirely still.
From the open plains, the music turns toward the intimate, unmistakable pulse of tango.
Cellist Roman Mekinulov takes center stage in 𝐌𝐢𝐠𝐮𝐞𝐥 𝐝𝐞𝐥 𝐀́𝐠𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐚'𝐬 𝑪𝒐𝒏𝒄𝒊𝒆𝒓𝒕𝒐 𝒆𝒏 𝑻𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒐, a concerto written specifically for Mekinulov and premiered by him. Born in Uruguay and based in the United States, del Águila has built an international reputation for music that brings the sounds of Latin America into conversation with contemporary classical composition. His music is often marked by dramatic contrasts and a strong sense of theatricality.
The evening concludes with 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐮𝐞𝐥 𝐝𝐞 𝐅𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐚'𝐬 𝑬𝒍 𝑺𝒐𝒎𝒃𝒓𝒆𝒓𝒐 𝒅𝒆 𝑻𝒓𝒆𝒔 𝑷𝒊𝒄𝒐𝒔, featuring mezzo-soprano Claire Shackleton. One of Spain's most important composers, de Falla drew deeply from the musical traditions of his country, particularly those of Andalusia. Commissioned by Sergei Diaghilev for the Ballets Russes, El Sombrero de Tres Picos brings Spanish dance rhythms into the concert hall. With Shackleton joining the orchestra, the work's vocal writing adds another layer to the final work on the program.
Together these composers connect Argentina, Uruguay and Spain. It’s a program rooted in rhythm, place, and musical identity. Join us Oct 8, 2026 at Orpheum theater for this riveting performance.

𝐀𝐥𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐨 𝐆𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚 (1916–1983) was a central figure in 20th-century Argentine music and one of the country's most internationally recognized composers. He studied and taught in Buenos Aires and became known for incorporating Argentine elements into increasingly modern and adventurous works. His music evolved considerably over the course of his career, moving from an accessible nationalism toward a more experimental style. 𝑷𝒂𝒎𝒑𝒆𝒂𝒏𝒂 𝑵𝒐. 𝟑, composed in 1954 and subtitled a "symphonic pastoral," reflects that period of transition, balancing a vivid sense of place with increasingly sophisticated orchestral language.
𝐌𝐢𝐠𝐮𝐞𝐥 𝐝𝐞𝐥 𝐀́𝐠𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐚 (b. 1957) is a Uruguayan-American composer whose music bridges Latin American traditions and the contemporary concert world. His works frequently draw upon tango, milonga, candombe, and other South American musical influences, while embracing the colors and possibilities of the modern orchestra. Known for his rhythmic drive and expressive theatricality, del Águila brings an unmistakable Latin American identity to his music. 𝑪𝒐𝒏𝒄𝒊𝒆𝒓𝒕𝒐 𝒆𝒏 𝑻𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒐 was written for cellist Roman Mekinulov and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Classical Composition.
𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐮𝐞𝐥 𝐝𝐞 𝐅𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐚 (1876–1946) was arguably the leading Spanish composer of his generation. Although his music reflects a broad range of European influences, his distinctive voice emerged from a deep engagement with Spain's musical heritage, particularly the traditions of Andalusia. De Falla sought not simply to quote folk music, but to capture its character and expressive spirit within sophisticated classical forms. 𝑬𝒍 𝑺𝒐𝒎𝒃𝒓𝒆𝒓𝒐 𝒅𝒆 𝑻𝒓𝒆𝒔 𝑷𝒊𝒄𝒐𝒔, commissioned by Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, became one of his most celebrated works. Its colorful orchestration, infectious dances, and vivid theatricality have made it a lasting favorite with audiences and performers alike.
