LoveU Buffalo Art Park to Celebrate Grand Unveiling in Historic Black Rock
New community destination brings together public art, mental wellness, hope, healing, and the power of human connection.
BUFFALO, NY — A new symbol of hope, resilience, and community pride is rising in Buffalo's Riverside and Black Rock neighborhoods.
The River Rock Community Coalition (RRCC) will officially unveil the LoveU Buffalo Art Park on Friday, October 30, 2026, at 10:30 a.m., at 99 Thompson Street, Buffalo, NY 14207. The community is invited to attend the ceremony and celebrate the transformation of a neighborhood space into an inspiring outdoor destination dedicated to public art, mental wellness, and human connection.
At the heart of the park stands a magnificent stainless steel Rising Phoenix sculpture titled “RISE” created by renowned Buffalo artist Larry W. Griffis III. The phoenix, a mythical bird that rises from its own ashes, serves as a powerful symbol of renewal, strength, and the ability to overcome adversity.
The symbolism holds special meaning in Black Rock, a neighborhood devastated by fire during the War of 1812 that ultimately rebuilt and endured. Much like the community itself, the phoenix represents the belief that even after life's most difficult moments, we can rise again.
A Community United Through Art
Surrounding the sculpture is an extraordinary collection of original artwork created by talented artists, each bringing their own creative interpretation of love, hope, resilience, and connection.
Featured mural artists include Chuck Tingley, Chris Piontkowski, Sarah Field Sonnenberg, Johnfredrick Daniels, Jeremy Miklas, Mic Excel, Kaleigh Day, Molly Strong, Marli Simmons, Nicole Fitzpatrick, and additional contributing artists.
Together, their artwork transforms the park into an open-air gallery, making meaningful artistic experiences accessible to residents and visitors of all ages, free of charge.
The park also features interactive installations designed to encourage reflection, self-love, positivity, and meaningful conversations about mental health. Visitors will discover reminders that their lives have value, their stories matter, and they are never alone.
Lock In Love. Share Your Story.
One of the park's most meaningful features is its Love Lock Fence, an interactive installation inviting visitors to attach a padlock as a lasting symbol of love, remembrance, encouragement, or support.
Inspired by love lock traditions around the world, the fence offers a place for individuals and families to honor loved ones, remember those lost, show support for someone facing difficult times, or simply celebrate the connections that give life meaning.
Each lock represents a unique story, creating a growing community expression of compassion and belonging.
The message is simple: One Fence. Many Stories. Endless Love.
More Than a Park — A Movement
The LoveU Buffalo Art Park is part of the larger LoveU Buffalo movement, an initiative rooted in the belief that love, compassion, connection, and self-worth can help strengthen individuals and entire communities.
Created through the River Rock Community Coalition, a volunteer-driven nonprofit dedicated to revitalizing Riverside and Black Rock, LoveU Buffalo seeks to break down the stigma surrounding mental health, encourage open conversations, promote suicide prevention awareness, and remind people that asking for help is a sign of strength.
For RRCC President and Founder George A. Fitzpatrick, who was born and raised in Riverside and Black Rock, the project is deeply personal.
“Through my own mental health struggles as a veteran, I've learned that strength doesn't mean never falling. Sometimes, it's simply finding the courage to rise again,” Fitzpatrick shared. “Losing a childhood friend to suicide taught me how deeply pain can be hidden and how much compassion and connection matter.”
“This park is my way of turning pain and loss into hope, right here in the community that raised me. More than anything, I want everyone who visits to discover the love and happiness that live within us all; to remember that their story isn't over, their life has meaning, and they matter more than they realize.”
A Vision That Continues to Grow
While the unveiling marks an exciting milestone, it represents only the beginning of the LoveU Buffalo Art Park's journey.
RRCC plans to expand the park's role as a community gathering place by introducing art therapy programming, creative wellness workshops, and inclusive neighborhood events that bring people together through artistic expression and shared experiences.
Future programming will emphasize emotional well-being, creativity, connection, and opportunities for residents of all ages and backgrounds to participate in the arts.
The goal is to create more than a beautiful public space. It is to establish a welcoming place where people can pause, reflect, express themselves, find encouragement, and feel connected to something larger than themselves.
The park also reflects RRCC's ongoing commitment to strengthening historically underserved neighborhoods by expanding equitable access to public art, supporting local artists, and creating positive community experiences.
A Celebration for the Entire Community
The LoveU Buffalo Art Park is the result of a collaborative effort involving local artists, community volunteers, businesses, donors, and public supporters who believe in the power of art to inspire meaningful change.
Residents, families, neighborhood organizations, artists, and visitors from throughout Western New York are encouraged to attend the unveiling and experience this new addition to the Riverside and Black Rock community.
