About this Event
Why Take This Course?
The Central Line is one of London's most famous Underground routes, carrying millions of passengers each year. Yet behind the familiar platforms and tunnels lies a rich story of ambition, innovation, architecture and design. This fascinating course explores how the line developed, the people who helped shape it, and the decisions that created one of the capital's most recognisable transport networks.
Taking a virtual journey across the route, you will discover the histories of key stations, explore the work of influential designers and architects, and examine how design helped transform travel in London. You will also learn about the role of electrification in powering and lighting the Underground, helping to create a modern transport system for a growing city.
The course also considers how the Central Line adapted during wartime and examines classic examples of universal design, including the famous London Underground roundel and tube map. Whether you are interested in history, architecture, transport, design or London itself, this course offers a fresh perspective on a remarkable piece of British heritage.
This is a live, tutor led course. Learning with like-minded people, there will be lots of opportunities to share your own knowledge and ideas and to hear from others. No previous knowledge is needed, just an interest in the topic and a willingness to explore and share ideas.
