About this Event
To celebrate London Repair Week, we wanted to offer something a bit different! Many of us may have heard or been to a Pecha Kucha night - A Japanese, story telling format, Inspired by the idea to "talk less, show more", enabling creatives to show their work over 20 slides for 20 seconds per slide. But have you been to a Pecha Kucha mending party before?
Each guest designer will present their work and demostrate a "Quick Fix" mending technique for 15 mins (give or take - it will be fluid!) At the end of the presentations, choose one of the techniques that inspired you and try out on an item of your own clothing in need of some TLC!
All levels of sewist or non sewist welcomed!
- Barley Massey will focus on buttons - how to re stitch, strengthen to avoid loosing as well as some decorative and restyling ideas using buttons.
- Emma Matthews will show basic darning to put a stitch in time to save nine of your beloved socks. (Each of Emma's Socko socks include a simple darning kit, which we sell at Fabrications incase you're wondering!)
- Rob Jones will demonstrate a "Nami Nui" running stitch on a raw edge reverse applique fabric patch. Nami Nui is the simplest, functional and decorative stitching technique used in traditional Japanese mending.
- Another guest TBC!

The evening is hosted by:
Barley Massey is the creator, crafter and care-taker behind Fabrications. Barley started sewing at a young age, thanks to both her grandmothers and just hasn't stopped! A textile graduate of Goldsmith's University, Barley went on to work in costume for Film & TV before establishing her own textile studio and shop (Fabrications) where she has been championing upcycling, mending and "Cradle to Cradle" principles for over 25 years. Alongside producing one off upcycled pieces, offering her "Remember Me" service, Barley hosts regular classes and events at Fabrications and also free-range!
E mma Mathews is the founder of sustainable, unisex sock brand Socko. Socko's socks (on sale at Fabrications) are made from 'waste' and manufactured by a 4th generation family run factory in Leicestershire. Each pair of socks is accompanied with a mending kit. Socko is also on a mission to extend the active life of clothing by re-teaching the lost art of darning. Emma has taught over 200 people to mend, both in person and via Socko's online workshops. Emma's first book "How to Quit Fast Fashion" was published in October 2020, giving practical tips on things we can all do to have more sustainable wardrobes.
Rob Jones is a textiles designer and founder of the brand Romor Designs. He takes inspiration from Japanese textiles disciplines including sashiko, boro, shibori and katagami stenciling. Rob's Boro mending work was featured as inspiration for contestants on the semi-final of the Great British Sewing Bee in 2022 . Rob has been teaching Japanese textile techniques at Fabrications for over 10 years. He also regularly visits Japan to travel, refresh his skills and purchase authentic vintage Japanese textiles and supplies to show and use in his classes.
