Rianne Downey spent much of last year touring with Paul Heaton while also establishing her own fanbase with a series of solo shows. Both live and on record, her voice is a thing of beauty. And her songs are the perfect vehicle for it.
“From busking on the streets of Glasgow to releasing this record, it almost feels like my whole life has led to this moment,” she says. “The title, ‘The Consequence of Love’, came from one of the last songs I wrote but it captures the heart of the whole album. Each song is the product of the consequence of love.”
Produced by Grammy winner Ryan Hadlock (Zach Bryan, Brandi Carlisle) and recorded at Seattle’s Bear Creek Studio, The Consequence of Love features ten tracks that effortlessly showcase a serious new country, folk voice. The songs were all written by Rianne Downey, some with her and long-time collaborator Nathaniel Laurence.
The ‘Consequence of Love’ was one of the last songs Rianne wrote for the album after watching her gran slowly lose the battle with dementia. “It’s a reflection on the fragile nature of life and love,” she says “I think naturally as people, we often hold onto a childlike belief that the ones we love will always be there, and it’s a painful realisation when life reminds us otherwise.”
Other album highlights include ‘Angel’, a joyful, folky excursion and the anthemic ‘Good in Goodbye’, an upbeat slice of country rock.
Rianne recently played a massive show with Paul Heaton at Sheffield United’s Bramall Lane. She returns to Glastonbury next month with her own band having dazzled alongside Paul Heaton on the Pyramid Stage last year. Summer shows with both Paul Heaton and supporting Texas will keep her busy before the release of her debut album.
Born in Belshill, just outside Glasgow, Rianne grew up on a steady diet of Patsy Cline, June Carter, Townes Van Zandt, Joni Mitchell and Fleetwood Mac. More recently she’s been influenced by Sierra Ferrel, Noah Kahan and First Aid Kit.
