About this Event

Living Black at University
A book launch and conversation hosted by the Centre for Advancing Race Equality (CARE), University of Northampton

Monday 23 November 2026 | 4:00–6:00 pm | Morley Room and online

The Centre for Advancing Race Equality (CARE) invites you to join us for the launch of Living Black at University: Anti-racist Praxis Beyond the Curriculum, edited by Nick Cartwright, ‘Teleola Cartwright and Osaro Otobo and published by Manchester University Press.

What does it mean to live Black at university? And what would it take to create a genuinely anti-racist university?

Universities have increasingly focused on decolonising the curriculum, but racism extends far beyond the classroom. It shapes institutional cultures, relationships, opportunities, mental health and everyday experiences of university life.

Bringing together academics, professional services staff, practitioners and people with lived experience, this book challenges universities to move beyond statements of commitment towards meaningful anti-racist change.

What to expect

This will be more than a traditional book launch. Join us for an accessible and thought-provoking conversation featuring:

  • An introduction to the book and the ideas behind it.
  • Short readings and recorded reflections from contributors explaining why their work matters.
  • A chaired discussion exploring structural racism, anti-racist possibilities and the power of lived experience.
  • Audience questions and conversation, followed by opportunities to connect with others interested in racial justice and higher education.

Who should attend?

CARE welcomes students, academics, professional services colleagues, community practitioners and anyone interested in racial justice, education and institutional change. No prior knowledge of the book is needed.

Joining us

Attendance is free, either in person at the University of Northampton or online. Please select your preferred option when registering.

The book will be published on 15 December 2026, with pre-order information and a discount code available at the event.

We look forward to welcoming you for an afternoon of challenging ideas, meaningful discussion and possibilities for change.
