A Night of Innovative Western Swing MusicAsleep at the Wheel has been a defining force in Texas and Western Swing music for over five decades. Since 1970, the band has featured more than 100 members, with lineup changes often inspiring new recordings and continued evolution. Although the band got its start on a farm in Paw Paw, West Virginia, they became a cornerstone of the Austin, Texas scene upon its arrival in 1973. Inspired by Western swing and honky-tonk country, the band has accrued 10 Grammy Awards.
A key element of the band’s sound remains the fiddle, now featuring vocalist and fiddler Ian Stewart, whose connection to Austin’s music scene helped lead him to the group. Band leader Ray Benson and Stewart both emphasize Asleep at the Wheel’s deep Texas roots, musical mentorship, and ongoing commitment to honoring and evolving Western Swing traditions through energetic live performance and collaboration.
This show is part of the Weinberg Center’s LIVE! Series, celebrating iconic music and exceptional musicianship. The Weinberg Center, located in the heart of Downtown Frederick, MD, offers a historic backdrop and excellent acoustics for a memorable concert experience.
