Join us at Te Matapihi ki te Ao Nui Central Library for a live reading of The Black Woman of Gippsland by Andrea James. This event will be held in Ngā Pou Ruahine (Level 2), Te Matapihi ki te Ao Nui Central Library.Based on real events and set on Andrea’s grandmother’s country, The Black Woman of Gippsland is a poetic, emotionally rich and clever embracing of First Nations stories that have long been silenced. In 2026, Andrea's play The Black Woman of Gippsland was awarded Nick Enright Prize for Playwriting at the NSW Literary Awards, with judges praising it as an outstanding and extraordinary work that deftly reveals how colonial myths shape the way histories are recorded and believed.
This event is part of the Breaking Ground: International Indigenous Writing Festival, produced by Te Whanganui-a-Tara based creative company, Tawata Productions, and made possible by our partners Wellington City Council, Creative New Zealand, Hannah Playhouse, Toi Aro and Te Haukāinga.
