Watch iconic clips, laugh out loud, and dig into big ideas spotlighting the Jewish stars behind Captain Kirk, Spock, and Chekov of Star Trek
About this Event

Dare to boldly go in costume.

Jewish actors were vital to the strength and success of the initial Star Trek (1966 – 1969) phenomenon particularly William Shatner as Captain Kirk, Leonard Nimoy as Spock, and Walter Koenig as Chekov. Although the show’s creator Gene Roddenberry was not Jewish, the values portrayed over the seasons reflected a strong Yiddishkeit (appreciation of Jewish values) such as Spock’s Vulcan salute. Richie Unterberger will show and discuss selected highlights from a variety of episodes, spotlighting the show’s music, underrated knack for comedy, and some of the most poignant and serious moments.

Do you dare?

Keep your Purim energy going and come dressed in your favorite Star Trek garb for this once in a lifetime presentation. If you do, please make sure not to wear full face masks or bring anything that would include/resemble weapons of any kind.

Rock historian Richie Unterberger is the author of numerous rock history books, including volumes on the Beatles, the Who, the Velvet Underground, Bob Marley, and 1960s folk-rock. He teaches courses on rock and soul music history at several Bay Area colleges. His latest book, San Francisco: Portrait of a City, was published by Taschen in 2022.
