Concerts take place from 12:10–12:50 p.m. in the Hochstein Performance Hall and are open to the public at no charge. These concerts are presented in partnership with WXXI and broadcast live on WXXI Classical 91.5 and rebroadcast at 10 p.m. the day of the concert.
John Dawson’s Live from Hochstein performance, “French Perspectives in Percussion,” highlights a selection of trends, styles, and approaches found in French composition of the last 50 years. The program features three guitar works by French composer Roland Dyens reimagined on the marimba. In each of these works, one will hear a blend of Dyens’s French classical training with popular styles from Brazil. Also on the program is Philippe Manoury’s Solo de vibraphone, from his monumental percussion work, Les Livres des Claviers, or Book of Keyboards. A staple in 20th century contemporary keyboard repertoire, the work offers a soloistic approach to music inspired by both spectral and serial traditions. French influence on percussion would be incomplete without a mention of French rudimental drumming: Pablo Rieppi’s solos from Rhythmic Roots create a rudimental fusion between French, Brazilian, and American rhythmic influences.
