Join us for Live at the Carnegie, a Saturday evening listening series, featuring unique performances by musicians not typically or otherwise found in Greater Mankato. Up next: an evening of NYC jazz piano and experimental electronic music...Pianist and composer Álvaro Torres is an emerging voice in New York City's creative jazz scene. His life has been shaped by an international trajectory, leading him to live in a variety of places such as Kathmandu, Barcelona, Copenhagen, and Berlin, experiences that have profoundly influenced his music. Since his debut album in 2019, "Specious Present", Álvaro has released four more albums as a leader for record labels like Sunnyside Records and Fresh Sound New Talent, and has collaborated with notable musicians such as Barry Altschul, Tony Malaby, Francisco Mela, Nasheet Waits, John Hébert, Kresten Osgood and Joe Fonda. His music blends post-bop and improvisation, drawing from elements of Spanish folklore and his strong classical music background. Influences include Ornette Coleman, Brahms, and Isaac Albéniz.
May Klug is a Minneapolis-based composer/performer and improviser whose deep relationships with pieces of audio equipment and electronic instruments are a bridge through which she explores the networks of technological development, industry, and modern social life. Her performances blend electroacoustic experimentalism with the visual aesthetics of pop, high-femme fashion, and camp theatrics. May’s primary electronic collaborators are Casio CZ-101 synthesizers, through which she generates sounds that capture the natural process of memory loss in volatile RAM. She also has built a variety of feedback systems, and works with Max/MSP. Her work celebrates the agency of these unpredictable machines. May's practice has been shaped by early experiences working with composers Paula Matthusen and Alvin Lucier. Her work has been featured in The Wire magazine, Bandcamp Daily, and Racket MN.
