The UKLA and NEU are pleased to announce a second joint conference on Literacy in Primary Classrooms taking place on Saturday 4th May. 8:45-4:15pm at Hamilton House.
This year we are delighted to be joined by our internationally renowned keynote speakers:
- Professor Teresa Cremin, Professor of Education at The Open University
- Joseph Coelho, children’s laureate, award-winning poet and playwright
We encourage all primary education staff to attend.
Workshops:
There will be a variety of workshops from experienced teachers, academics and organisations on a range of topics, including:
- Supporting children's speech, language and communication skills in the classroom with Carol Payne, Deputy Chief Executive, Speech and Language UK
- Practical approaches to reading for pleasure, including the use of graphic novels, with NEU member and Educate columnist Jon Biddle
- Reflecting Realities in the Book Corner with Farrah Serroukh, Research and Development Director at CLPE
- Assessing Reading Comprehension: Going beyond 'right' and 'wrong' answers with Dr Wayne Tennent, Senior Lecturer at Brunel University
- Read the rainbow: using LGBT+ books in Primary Education with Victoria Lockhart
- Using Poetry to Navigate Still Waters and Stormy Seas with Rebecca Simpson-Hargreaves Primary PGCE Lecturer in Education, University of Manchester
- She, He, Me and Them: Gender representation in children's literature & the primary classroom, also with Rebecca Simpson-Hargreaves
- Teaching Reading to pupils with Autism Spectrum Conditions, ADHD and PDA with Jenny Davis - Communication, Language and Literacy Lead at Springhallow School
- Engaging and motivating all children to read and write for pleasure in EY and KS1 with Helen Hendry and Samantha Hulston, Research Associate, The Open University.
- Teaching Phonics: a focus on EAL and inclusion with Nicole Gurvidi, Primary Curriculum Lead (English) for Tower Hamlets Education Partnership

Following the success of previous conferences, demand looks to be high, so we advise early booking. We have a small selection of discounted tickets for NEU student members which are guaranteed to sell out.
NEU members can also ask their districts to sponsor their attendance by asking for their travel and accommodation costs to be covered.
Sandwich lunch and refreshments will be provided on the day.
Cancellation Policy:
If you cancel your ticket by midnight on 27th April, a full refund would be provided. Thereafter no refund. We request tickets are not transferred or re-sold. If you are not NEU or UKLA member, we reserve the right to cancel your booking and return your ticket price minus the Eventbrite booking fee.
