About this Event
JOIN US for a faculty workshop on what it takes to build a bilingual program from the ground up, drawing on experience developing Spanish-medium courses within CUNY and models from institutions across the country. We will open with a data-driven lecture on the institutional, pedagogical, and evidentiary groundwork involved, along with current research on bilingualism and Spanish-medium instruction in higher education. The second half is a working session where we brainstorm concrete possibilities for bilingual programming at Rutgers-Newark, shaped around our own students and context.
Cristina Lozano Argüelles is a linguist who studies why it's actually an asset, helping schools, colleges, and workplaces capitalize on bilingualism to expand career paths, deepen belonging, and build literacy. Her research spans the cognitive processing of bilingualism (including eye-tracking studies) to institutional program design. Dr. Lozano Argüelles is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at John Jay College of Criminal Justice (CUNY), where she teaches translation and interpreting and works on building the infrastructure to support Spanish-medium instruction in higher education.
