On Tuesday, October 6 at 5:30pm in the North Academic Commons atrium, Lion Rock Visiting Writers Series will host multi-genre author and creative writing Professor MAYA JEWELL ZELLER, who will present a reading of Raised by Ferns (Porphyry Press), a memoir-in-essays on wildness, education, parenting, and, as she writes, “intersectional issues affecting those living working and middle-class realities in a fractured, climate-grief America.” This presentation will be followed by a Q&A and book signing. This event is in-person only, FREE and open to all. Please RSVP for in-person attendance at the reading via this invitation. Students will have the chance to win one of five copies of Raised by Ferns.
Raised by Ferns has been featured on various NPR affiliates, and was recently chosen as the 2027 One Book, One County pick by the Kittitas County Regional Library Board. Kirkus Reviews describes the memoir as “A lyrical and heart-wrenching exploration of the fragility of privilege and the social systems that protect it”; The North American Review states, “This is a book…using close, imaginative examination and fine-tuned language….” to “take on topics of class, academia and poverty in America.”
