Don’t bin your old computer! Give it a new lease of life with Linux, save money and reduce e-waste... all with cake & balloons!
About this Event

Windows 10 is coming to the end of the road, but that doesn’t mean you need to choose between buying a new laptop or going without security updates.

Come along to our Linux Install Party and discover how you can give an older computer a new lease of life with Linux: a free, secure and flexible alternative to Windows.

Linux is a family of free and open source operating systems, which means no paid security updates. Because it is built by and for the community, it runs well on older hardware, and new features are those that real people want - not shareholders. Even if you haven't heard of Linux, you've likely used it! It powers most of the internet, as well as everything from Android phones, to supercomputers, to vending machines.

No technical experience is needed. We’ll help you through the process, answer your questions, and show you what Linux can do. Bring along your laptop if you’re thinking of updating, and we’ll see if we can give it a second life. If you're not sure, feel free to pop along anyway, ask questions and check out our demos!
You might have seen us at the Galway Repair Café where we install Linux Mint. Mint remains our top recommendation, but we're considering bringing a couple of other flavours for people to try out. If there's something in particular you'd like to try out, let us know before the event and we'll try to have it there for you.
