Keynote Lecture: Linda Trinkaus ZagzebskiDoes the Post-Theistic View of Human Rights Make Sense?
The conference will conclude with a keynote lecture by Professor Linda Trinkaus Zagzebski, who will examine one of the most pressing ethical questions of our time: can the idea of human rights remain philosophically coherent once its theistic foundations are abandoned? In her lecture, Professor Zagzebski will argue that contemporary moral discourse increasingly replaces the language of virtue with competing claims of individual rights, while reason gives way to subjective desires and feelings. Drawing on her work in virtue ethics and philosophy of religion, she will reflect on the relationship between rights, virtues, and the moral foundations necessary for a flourishing society.
Professor Linda Trinkaus Zagzebski is George Lynn Cross Research Professor Emerita and Kingfisher College Chair of the Philosophy of Religion and Ethics Emerita at the University of Oklahoma. An internationally acclaimed philosopher, she is best known for her pioneering work in virtue epistemology, virtue ethics, philosophy of religion, and philosophical theology.
This lecture is part of the 4th International Conference Christian Philosophy: Between Christian and Post-Christian Worldviews, taking place on 22–23 September 2026 at the University Ignatianum in Cracow. The conference brings together leading philosophers and scholars from around the world to explore the dialogue between Christian and post-Christian worldviews, addressing fundamental questions concerning religion, ethics, politics, culture, and the future of philosophical thought in contemporary society.
Professor Zagzebski will participate in the conference online. Participants are welcome to attend the keynote either in person in Room 101 at the University Ignatianum in Cracow or online via live stream, making this exceptional lecture accessible to audiences both on-site and around the world
