Please join us for the opening of 'Light Enough' by Selwyn Hoffmann.Selwyn will also be giving an artist talk at 12pm, with the opening following 1-3pm. An Auslan interpreter will be present for the talk.
'As a Deaf person,
I seek a radiant space
where I can communicate.
I see hands, faces, and movement.
Our bodies become language.
In the past, Deaf people gathered
in illuminated spaces after dark.
They stood together in the light
so they could sign into the night.
Light became a place
to meet and belong.
My paintings carry
this idea of light.
Colour emerges from darkness.
Circles come together.
Patterns break apart
and join again.
Bright lines become doors,
windows, and pathways
between darkness and light.
Light can reveal a boundary.
Light can become an opening.
Light can become a gathering place.
The darkness is still there.
But even a small light
can be enough
for language to continue.
In the light,
we find one another.'
