Workshop overview
This is an exploratory figure-drawing workshop with an emphasis on enjoying the process of looking, experimenting and seeing where your materials and drawings lead you.
Please arrive before 10am so that you have plenty of time to get settled, arrange your materials and be ready for us to start promptly at 10am.
There will be a series of timed poses, giving you lots of opportunities to make drawings quickly and intuitively. Rather than aiming for a finished drawing, we’ll work in short bursts and respond to colour, pattern, fabric and the human form, allowing the materials and the marks you make to influence what happens next.
Bring paper and a selection of art materials that you enjoy using and can work with quickly. I’ll provide some basic materials too, but do bring along anything you’d like to experiment with.
You’ll also have the chance to meet local artist Anna Flack and see some of her work. Anna celebrates colour, pattern and fabric in her practice, and we’ll be curious to see how these qualities might influence our own drawings.
Halfway through the workshop there will be a break with refreshments provided, including tea, coffee and a cold drink. It will be a chance to pause and look at what we’ve made.
The workshop will be led by Jayne Ruffell-Ward, a local art tutor and artist who runs regular workshops through the Cambridge Drawing and Image Making Group. Jayne has over ten years’ experience teaching and is passionate about creating relaxed, encouraging workshops that help people build confidence, experiment and, most of all, enjoy drawing.

Below are some of my drawings from the first time I drew Anna. I found the colour and pattern a little overwhelming at first, but quickly started to enjoy playing with pastel, shapes and marks. They’re short, time-limited drawings — not finished pieces, but a record of experimenting, responding and seeing what happened.
Good to know
All of my classes aim to encourage the enjoyment of seeing and learning how to depict what you see, while becoming familiar with new materials and building confidence through experimentation and practice.
Do have a look at my other Eventbrite page for my regular drawing classes, starting on 28th and 30th September. These run for 10 weeks each term, on Monday and Wednesday mornings from 10am–12pm, and explore drawing skills, techniques and a variety of materials.
