About this Event
Please join us to celebrate the unveiling of "Lewiston is Our Hope."
This project was born from ongoing conversations between Yun Loh, a Lewiston-based psychologist and professor at Bates College, and local community leaders and residents about what it means to live, work, and build community in Lewiston. These conversations often returned to a shared recognition: even during difficult times, Lewiston is a community filled with hope.
From these conversations emerged a question: How might we make the hope that already lives in Lewiston visible? How might we give people an opportunity to share the hopes they carry for themselves, their families, their neighbors, and their community?
Yun and a team of Bates College students hosted more than 40 workshops at community gathering places throughout the Lewiston/Auburn area. Community members were invited to represent their visions of “hope” on small, locally sourced wood circles and to share a little about what they created and how it expressed their hope in Lewiston.
More than 400 community members contributed their expressions of hope to the project. Together, these hundreds of pieces form a collective artwork that reflects the many different ways hope already exists within our Lewiston community.
We are beyond excited to unveil the final composite artwork at the Lewiston Public Library. The celebration will feature food from Lewiston-based restaurants, musical expressions of hope from local musicians, and arts-based activities designed to encourage conversation and connection.
At its heart, this project is not about bringing hope to Lewiston. It is about recognizing, honoring, and making visible the hope that is already here.
We hope to see you there. :)
