Your Topic:

Let's Talk about Dance!

What is dance? Who dances in Australia? Community dancing is not just a physical activity- it acts as a social lubricant, expression of cultural identity, agent of political activism and more. Culturally and Linguistically Diverse communities lead the way, yet for many Anglo Australians, dance remains a remote, mysterious activity performed on stages and screens (except when Nutbush is played).  Come along- you may even be inspired to dance!

Your Speaker:

Dr. Jeanette Mollenhauer is an Honorary Fellow at The University of Melbourne, whose research focuses on community dance, especially exploring the significance of traditional dance among immigrant groups in Australia. She has published two books, Dancing at the Southern Crossroads: A History of Irish Step Dance in Australia 1880-1940 and Cultural Dance in Australia, as well as academic book chapters and journal articles. Jeanette belongs to the International Council for Traditions of Music and Dance along with several other scholarly organisations, and has lectured in the UK, USA and Europe. She is also a recreational folk dance teacher and serves on the National Committee of Folk Dance Australia.
