🧠 Lecture: "Does Joy Need Pain?"
🎙️ Speaker: Dr. Charlie Engelmann
Join us for an evening exploring a surprising question: does joy actually require pain? Joy is not the same as happiness. While happiness is often imagined as the absence of negative emotion, joy is different—it can exist alongside grief, disappointment, and discomfort.
Drawing from his dissertation research on joyfulness, Dr. Charlie Engelmann will explain how difficult emotions may be essential for developing the mental frameworks that make joy possible. He will share what sets joyful people apart, focusing on their unique explanatory styles and how they interpret life’s challenges.
Dr. Engelmann is the Associate Dean of Pepperdine University's international programs and teaches courses in economics, international studies, and thriving. He holds a PhD in Higher Education from Azusa Pacific University's School of Behavioral Science, where he studied the role of joyfulness in college student thriving.
Come rethink what it means to live a joyful life—even when things are hard.
