Professor Drew McClellan will explore how filmmakers—past and present—use light, shadow, composition, and the grayscale to conjure mood, build dread, and keep audiences on edge. From ominous, enveloping darkness to stark, overexposed highlights, you’ll discover how every frame is meticulously crafted to heighten suspense, amplify unease, and mirror the psychological and emotional tensions at the heart of the genre.
Drew McClellan is an award-winning educator, filmmaker, and visual strategist whose work focuses on the intersection of cinematic storytelling and emerging media technologies. A Professor of Practice at The Sidney Poitier Film School at Arizona State University and adjunct professor at USC’s School of Cinematic Arts, he has partnered with institutions including National Geographic, Netflix, Paramount/Nickelodeon, and The Golden Globes.
