🧠 Lecture: "The Art of the NYC Subway System: Animals on Display"
🎤 Speaker: Kristin McCollum
Ride the rails in a whole new way as museum educator and transit superfan Kristin McCollum reveals the secret wildlife of the New York City subway. From tilework and mosaics to terracotta and elevated glasswork, animals have been hiding in plain sight in stations across the city—some since the Victorian era, others as part of the system’s modern renaissance.
Once Kristin shows you where to look, you’ll never experience your commute the same way again. You’ll discover how these creatures got there, what they represent, and how art has quietly transformed everyday travel into a rolling gallery of New York history and imagination.
Kristin McCollum leads and develops tours at the Morgan Library & Museum, the Museum of the City of New York, and her one true love, the New York Transit Museum. She also teaches and performs improv with Improvolution and creates NYC history and art content as NerdingOutonNYC on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube.
