🧠 Lecture: "Surviving the Extremes: From the Deep Ocean to Space"
🎤 Speaker: Dr. Malica Schmidt
Join us for a captivating journey from the ocean’s depths to the vacuum of space as Dr. Malica Schmidt explores what it takes to keep humans alive where nature offers almost no margin for error. From deep underwater and high-altitude mountaintops to polar regions and spacecraft, she will reveal the science and technology that allow us to breathe, stay hydrated, nourished, and protected in the most hostile environments.
Dr. Schmidt will unpack how life-support systems are designed to supply oxygen, remove carbon dioxide, manage pressure, conserve water, and provide food when conventional infrastructure is unavailable. Drawing on research conducted during parabolic flights and aboard the International Space Station—as well as her experience as a technical diver, high-altitude mountaineer, analog astronaut, and more—she will show how resource-efficient innovations could transform both future exploration and life on Earth.
Beyond the engineering, this lecture asks a profound question: how can we enable humans not just to survive, but to thrive, when help is far away?
