🧠 Lecture: "Did You See That? Understanding Visual Hallucinations"
🎤 Speaker: Dr. Heidi Hernandez
Join us for a fascinating evening as Dr. Heidi Hernandez uncovers how the brain can create vivid images that go far beyond reality. This lecture explores the neural pathways behind visual hallucinations, from subtle illusions to detailed, well-formed visions.
Dr. Hernandez will explain the wide range of causes for hallucinations—including ophthalmic conditions, organic brain lesions, psychological states, and psychedelic substances—and show how each can shape what we see. You’ll gain insight into how the brain interprets, distorts, and sometimes invents visual experiences.
An assistant professor and clinical optometrist at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Dr. Hernandez specializes in neuro-ophthalmic disease, a field at the intersection of neurology and eye health. Drawing on extensive clinical experience, she offers a unique perspective on how tightly our eyes and brains are connected. She earned her degree from UAB and completed her residency at the Pennsylvania College of Optometry with Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA.
