🧠 Lecture: "The Vasa Warship: From Shipwreck to Museum"

🎤 Speaker: Dr. Caroline Malloy

What if you could explore a nearly complete 17th-century European battleship? Join historian Dr. Caroline Malloy for the dramatic story of the Vasa, the pride of Swedish King Gustavus Adolphus’ fleet. From its controversial construction in the 1620s to its humiliating sinking and centuries-long disappearance, the Vasa’s journey is one of failure, rediscovery, and reinvention.

In the 1950s, the Vasa’s resurrection from the depths pushed Sweden to pioneer new salvage technologies and sparked global interest in what other histories might lie hidden beneath the sea. Today, the Vasa Museum is a leader in maritime archaeology and innovative preservation.

Dr. Malloy will explore how this iconic ship has been brought to life twice: first as a weapon of war, and now as a cutting-edge museum object. You’ll learn how conservators, engineers, and curators work together to keep a 400-year-old battleship intact and relevant.

Dr. Malloy is a Chicago-based historian, book coach, and editor with a Ph.D. in Art History. She lectures internationally on world’s fairs, heritage, and national identity, and serves as a Resident Historian with Viking Ocean cruises.
