Class Description

This is a series of three one-hour FREE lectures taught by instructor Jim Bredt. These lectures are a prerequisite for the course "Design and Metalworking."

*Admission to the course is not required to attend the free lectures.

Learning Objectives

* An intuitive feel for the strength of steel.

* How to do back-of-the envelope stress analysis

* Basic SolidWorks part design

* SolidWorks stress analysis package

* Basic understanding of directed-energy tools

* Details of the operation of some specific directed-energy tools

Mechanics and Strength of Materials - October 18th, 8:00 - 9:00 PM - Large Classroom

How strong is steel? In this hour-long free lecture, students will get a feel for what this material has the potential to do, and how to estimate the right size of steel needed for a project.

***

Energy Tools - October 22nd, 8:00 - 9:00 PM - Large Classroom

Some tools operate by projecting energy directly onto the workpiece, without making solid contact. Tools in this category include: Laser- and plasma-cutters, arc welders, Induction forge, and stereolithographic 3D printers.

In the one-hour FREE lecture, the common characteristics of projected-energy tools will be presented, and the special properties of the different tools will be discussed.

***

SolidWorks design and stress analysis - October 23rd, 8:00 - 9:00 PM - Digital Design and Photography shop.

Artisans Asylum has a group license for this computer-aided design (CAD) package. This hour-long FREE lecture will provide a demonstration on how to use SolidWorks to design sheet-metal parts. In addition, we will demonstrate the use of SolidWorks' stress-analysis package.

Attendance to these lectures is required for people who have registered for the class "Design and Metalworking." The lecture will be offered during the week before that class starts.

Instructor - Jim Bredt

Jim Bredt is a retired inventor and machine designer who worked for 30 years in the 3D printing industry. He has been active at Artisans Asylum for 10 years and used the shops at AA to develop hardware for one of his 3DP startup companies. In addition to mechanical design and fabrication, he also teaches a weekly figure drawing class.

Class Policies
