Milford’s Revolutionary War Hero, Joseph Plumb Martin:
A Lecture and Discussion by Dr. Philip Mead
(Milford, Conn. October 27, 2026) The Milford 250th Celebration Committee and Lauralton Hall are pleased to announce Milford’s Revolutionary War Hero: Joseph Plumb Martin: A Lecture and Discussion by Dr. Philip Mead, to be held at 7pm at Lauralton Hall on December 1, 2026.
Joseph Plumb Martin was only fifteen years old when he signed his enlistment papers on Milford Green in June 1776. Born in Becket, Massachusetts, he moved to Milford at age seven to live with his grandparents near Gulf Pond. Martin’s service lasted throughout the Revolutionary War, during which Martin found himself at the center of several key battles and events, including: the battles for Long Island, Brooklyn, Trenton, Princeton, and Monmouth, along with the execution of the British spy John Andre, the winter at Valley Forge, and the American victory at the Siege of Yorktown.
In 1830, Martin published A Narrative of Some of the Adventures, Dangers, and Sufferings of a Revolutionary War Soldier…, a history of his experience in the war. Martin’s narrative is filled with insightful first-hand observations about life as a soldier during the Revolution. Today, his account is considered one of the best, if not the best, account of American life during the war to have survived to the present day.
As a result of the popularity of his narrative, today Martin is celebrated in places outside Milford like Valley Forge, which features the Joseph Plumb Martin Trail, or the Museum of the American Revolution, which boasts an entire exhibition dedicated to Martin’s life as a soldier. Martin has even been featured as a character on two PBS shows: Liberty’s Kids and Liberty! The American Revolution. However, in Milford, Martin’s adopted hometown, there is no permanent monument to his heroism and sacrifice. This lecture by Dr. Mead, the nation’s leading expert on Martin, is the first step toward creating support for a permanent monument to Martin in Milford.
Dr. Mead is the former founding curator of the Museum of the American Revolution and is in the process of writing the definitive biography of Joseph Plumb Martin. A graduate of Brown University with a doctorate from Harvard University, he is the proprietor of Mead Americana and is one of the nation’s foremost historians of the American Revolution.
