Leadership Scholars Academy™ Session 2: The Leader Within- Leading Budget & Financial Decisions

2‑Day Interactive Workshop Agenda

Program Description

The LSUHNO School of Nursing Leadership Scholars Academy™ is an immersive two-day leadership development program designed to strengthen participants’ financial literacy and decision-making capacity by providing practical instruction in healthcare budgeting, finance, and financial stewardship.

This seminar addresses the financial responsibilities increasingly expected of healthcare leaders, including interpreting financial statements, developing and justifying budgets, monitoring financial performance, and communicating financial information to staff and stakeholders. Content is delivered through a combination of didactic instruction, facilitated discussion, and real-world budget and finance scenarios drawn from healthcare practice.

Grounded in the theme “Leading from Within: Using the Science and Art of Leadership and Management,” the program emphasizes personal leadership as the foundation for effective team and organizational leadership.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this two-day educational activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain core healthcare finance principles, including terminology, reimbursement models, and ethical and regulatory considerations that influence organizational performance and stewardship.
  2. Interpret key financial statements (income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow statement) to evaluate the financial health of a healthcare organization.
  3. Differentiate and apply operating, capital, and labor budgets, including constructing and justifying a departmental nursing labor budget using workload and patient volume measures.
  4. Analyze financial performance data, including budget-to-actual variances, and identify appropriate corrective actions.
  5. Apply financial decision-making tools, such as cost-benefit analysis and return on investment, and communicate financial information effectively to staff and leadership using reports and dashboards.

At the conclusion of the seminar, participants will demonstrate enhanced competence and confidence in healthcare financial management. Learners will be prepared to actively participate in budget development, monitoring, and financial decision‑making within their organizations. Participants will be able to critically evaluate financial information, justify resource allocation decisions, and communicate financial expectations and outcomes effectively to diverse audiences.

As a result of this activity, participants are expected to improve their ability to:

  1. Contribute meaningfully to budgeting and financial planning processes
  2. Identify financial risks and opportunities affecting patient care and operations
  3. Support organizational sustainability through informed financial stewardship
  4. Align financial decisions with strategic, ethical, and regulatory considerations
