This year as we celebrate your hard-won right to train, play, and escape the daily grind at our annual Labour Day No-Gi Championships! This tournament directly honors Gi (義)—the foundational Bushido warrior code of Justice, Rectitude, and Fairness—by celebrating the historic New Zealand movements that fought to bring balance and equality to everyday people. That struggle for justice began when Māori timber workers in the 1821 Bay of Islands Dispute staged our first strike to demand fair value for their energy, laying a foundation of self-determination just before the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in February 1840 marked the official birth of New Zealand. In that exact same month, carpenter Samuel Parnell stood firm to secure the eight-hour working day, carving out the very concept of dedicated "leisure time" to protect the balance of human life. That collective grit moved right into our backyard during the 1889 Dunedin Tailoresses’ Strike, where local clothing workers shattered the heavy, unfair pressure of the city's sweatshops, and reached a legendary turning point in the 1908 Blackball Mine Strike when an entire workforce struck for three months to protect a miner's right to basic dignity. Today, we bring that same warrior spirit, community solidarity, and commitment to a fair, rules-based system onto the mats together at 3:00 PM on Monday, 26 October 2026—proving that hard work, absolute equality, and purposeful struggle are the ultimate expression of our art. When the brackets are settled and the placement medals are handed out, our champions and podium places recieve medals
