Hélène, enlevée par Pâris, est réclamée par les Grecs. Mais la plupart des Troyens, fascinés par sa beauté, refusent de la rendre. D’âpres négociations s’ensuivent. Les partisans de la paix l’emporteront-ils ? Avec cette relecture de la mythologie antique, Giraudoux s’adresse aussi à ses contemporains : en 1935, la Première Guerre mondiale est encore dans les mémoires. Et la pièce, qui interroge le caractère éternel des conflits armés, fait surgir la menace d’une nouvelle tragédie, peut-être imminente…
