A compelling recital by pianistic giant Kirill Gerstein journeys through some of the Romantic repertoire’s most profound piano works by the very different voices of Liszt and Brahms.
Inspired by the passionate and poetic sonnets of the Italian Renaissance poet, Liszt’s Three Petrarch Sonnets marries virtuosic technique to expressive lyricism. His monumental Après une lecture de Dante: Fantasia quasi Sonata is a dramatic and intense reflection on Dante’s Divine Comedy.
Brahms’s Scherzo in E-flat minor is fiery and rhythmically-charged, his Piano Sonata No. 3 a masterful, richly textured showcase of robust romantic style and complexity.
