Kinnes van Somers re-members the Antjie Somers myth through folk drama and shadow play, creating a world where childhood warnings, family stories and inherited stories begin to blur with reality. Tamsyn Alexander co-directs the production with Hanro Cloete. At the centre is Dolli, who grows up hearing about Antjie Somers - the dark figure who moves between light and lie, “dressed in another man’s sin and another woman’s name”. As the legend begins to stir within her, the production asks what happens to the stories we inherit when they become part of who we are.
Following a successful run at this year’s Suidoosterfees, Kinnes van Somers was also recognised at the 2026 Zabalaza Theatre Festival in March, receiving awards for Best Production, Best Ensemble and Best Director(s).
Through its distinctive visual language, physical performance and exploration of memory, inheritance and identity, Kinnes van Somers offers a theatrical experience that invites you to look again at the stories that shape us.
