Explore what makes the Islands unique and how they connect to the Anacostia River, surrounding neighborhoods, and the wider region.
About this Event

The DC Department of Energy and Environment (DOEE) invites you to participate in an in-person charrette for the Kingman & Heritage Islands Structures and Trails Design Project.

Building on what we heard during Phase 1, this session will focus on Place and Connection. We'll explore the natural and cultural features that make the Islands special and how the project's nine Design Elements work together to shape the visitor experience. Using island-wide diagrams, the project team will walk through the experiences and features found across the Islands, along with how people get there today and could in the future.

We'll also zoom out to see Kingman & Heritage Islands in the context of the entire Anacostia River. The Islands are an important piece of a larger natural corridor and wildlife habitat, and they sit among a network of parks, river destinations, and water access points along the Anacostia. The discussion will consider nearby neighborhoods, current and planned development in the area, including the RFK Campus, and the ways people reach the Islands on foot, by bike, by transit, and by water.

Participants are encouraged to ask questions and provide input that can help inform future project development.

What We'll Discuss:

  • The unique natural and cultural features of the Islands
  • How the nine Design Elements relate to one another
  • Island-wide experiences and features
  • How the Islands fit within the Anacostia River corridor and surrounding neighborhoods
  • Current and future ways to access the Islands
  • Next steps for the project
  • Opportunities for discussion with the project team

There are two session options for the "Places and Connection" topic. Each session covers the same content, so choose the one that works best for you. See other here.

This charrette is part of the 30% Design Phase of a two-year design period. We hope you'll join us as we continue planning for the future of Kingman & Heritage Islands. For more information, please visit our website or email [email protected].
