About this Event

Kendo (剣道, "way of the sword") is a modern Japanese martial art that has its roots in traditional swordsmanship. The objective of kendo is to strike one's opponent with a bamboo sword while wearing protective armor. The practice of kendo emphasizes the development of one's character, focusing on discipline, perseverance, and respect for others. Kendo practitioners strive to achieve a balance between physical and mental training, as well as technical proficiency in the art of swordsmanship.

Southampton Kendo Club welcomes adults of all ages and abilities. Whether you are a seasoned martial artist or a complete beginner, the club offers a supportive and welcoming environment to help you learn and develop your skills.

The beginners course is 8 weeks long, training every Monday at 7:30 - 9:30pm and has been designed to teach everything you need to safely join in kendo sparring and train with the rest of the club. The club will provide all equipment needed. You will need to wear suitable clothing for sports (e.g. t-shirt and jogging bottoms) and bring water.

The course includes:

- Etiquette of the dojo

- How to make basic attacks

- How to practice kata (set forms)

- How to create opportunity to attack

- How to remain in control after an attack

- How to score a valid point

- Free sparring in armour

On completion of the course you will able to join the main class, and soon after begin to train in kendo armour.

See our website for more info and FAQ, or feel free to contact us.
