Bios
Dr. Jury Kobayashi-Mackay is a composer-performer, scholar and writer. He is also the program operation coordinator and a teaching artist at OrKidstra. His music has been featured in a variety of contexts including, performer-composer festivals such as Westben, radio shows throughout Canada, and on the BBC. His main musical ensemble is Drip Duo. Jury Kobayashi-Mackay and Drip DuoDrip duo comprises of Dr. Helen Taylor Abbot on viola and Dr. Jury Tosh Kobayashi-Mackay on double bass. What begins as a drip is always followed by a drip. Dripping an act of defiance; an act of repetition. We drip as we drop low, and long. We drip as we sound notes above and below. What flows from our drip is the echo of the past and the anticipation of what is coming. We come, arrive, by way of Cecil Taylor, Jimmy Lyons, Anthony Braxton, Wadada Leo Smith, Glenn Spearman but also the worlds of Dmitri Shostakovich, and Bela Bartok.
