Josué Estrada found out he had perfect pitch when he was seven. In sixth grade he tried a saxophone reed, no sound came out, and the teacher told him to try a trumpet mouthpiece instead.
He's a first-generation Mexican American from Wichita, and he calls what he plays "psychedelic Chicano jazz." "It's about fusing jazz with my culture, my story, and making something that feels like home," he told the Daily Egyptian in 2025. He writes some of his lyrics in Spanish; his song "Sacúdete" translates roughly to "dust yourself off." He names Christian Scott, whose genre-blending style pushed him to define his own, as an inspiration.
Before he led his own band, he played trumpet on Carrie Nation & The Speakeasy's 2018 album, GNOSIS. During the pandemic he started writing and recording his own music in his bedroom. Since forming the Josué Estrada Band, he's played Raleigh and Charlotte, the Sunset Concert series in Carbondale, Illinois, and the 2026 Somewhere Fest lineup in downtown Wichita. On a bandstand, he told KMUW in 2016, "I try to think as little as possible and feel as much as possible."
