After a first duo meeting at Café Oto in 2015 that resulted in their record «So beautiful, it starts to rain» (Clean Feed) Butcher and Solberg have been playing as a duo through several tours in Scandinavia and England. Using unconventional material for a sax/drums duo they tend to play sets that move forward in a relaxed way, although they are confrontational in the way they challenge each other.
Both musicians have highly developed extended techniques as a key element of their sound, but this duo stays true to the idea of free improvisation and also uses strong melodies and repetetive beats, taking different paths each time.
As well as playing duo, they have played trios with a wide range of partners - Agnes Hvizdalek, Nick Stephens, Kaja Draksler, Barre Phillips and mostly Pat Thomas with whom they’ve released their second album as a trio on Trost in the autumn of 2024.
