John Berger Centenary Celebration5 November 2026 is the centenary of the birth of John Berger – art critic, writer, painter, and novelist. Berger was the model of a public intellectual and always linked his work to the fate of the wretched of the earth: the poor, peasants, immigrant workers, and the global working class. His work was also highly personal, connecting such public politics to the intimacy of our relationships with each other and nature.
The event will include screenings of two short filmpoems, ‘Ways of Seeing Trees: In Memory John Berger’ (3 mins) and ‘Salt, Snow, Earth’ (1 min), by Naomi Foyle, Reader in Critical Imaginative Writing, with Razia Aziz and Wendy Pye; and, with special permission of John’s son Yves Berger, family photographs of John and his artworks. You are invited to come with a short text of Berger’s to read and/or some words (impromptu or prepared) to share about your ‘way into’ John Berger and his effect on your way of being.
5 November | 12:00-12:50 p.m | The Cloisters
