SeekArt presents Jitsvinger at Cape Town Jazz Club. When Quintin Goliath coined the term Afrikaaps, he gave a name to a language that had long existed in the mouths of Cape Flats communities, but seldom received the recognition it deserved.
Two decades later, Afrikaaps has become a marker of identity for a generation reclaiming the language it speaks.
Jitsvinger describes his sound as a “sizzling Kaapse cuisine”: rhymes and ballads served over roasted etudes and heritage-drenched harmonies.
On Thursday 26 November, he brings that sound to Cape Town Jazz Club for two sets with a full band:
Jitsvinger - vocals and guitar
Winston Siljeur - keys
André Hope - bass
Chanté Phillips - drums
For those who know Afrikaaps, this is a chance to hear their language elevated without losing its edge. For those encountering it for the first time, it is an invitation to listen differently.
