We had to change the name for... reasons, so... regardless, welcome to our event. LoLAs we've mentioned before, one of the best ways to test a martial artist's ability to use an edged weapon is to do so against a physical target, not in the air. Tatami mats are great but expensive. Pumpkins right after Halloween are cheap, and a fairly good thing to cut.
For this year's Pumpkin chopping we're going to stick to the relaxed potluck style event. We ask that you bring what you would to a relaxed BBQ like you did last year, and we'll supply the pumpkins, a grill and some hot and cold drinks (no booze if you are cutting).
We'll also have a fire going to keep warm.
Just like past years, we're inviting select people from outside our club to participate in the craziness (at our discretion of course), so if you have a friend you think would enjoy this insanity, feel free to invite them and if we approve, they can participate.
We're planning on filling at least my truck and trailer of pumpkins again this year, but there should be plenty of pumpkins to go around.
We are asking for at least a 5 dollar donation to off-set the cost of the snacks and the Pumpkins. We'll have a money can out or something.
For lunch, bring a side of some kind and whatever fancy beverage you'd like. We'll have some stuff, but variety is the spice of life.
For the pumpkins, we'll have a table worth of swords to cut the pumpkins up, but please feel free to bring whatever implements you'd like to chop, slash, or bash the pumpkin menace with. Edged weapons encouraged, but blunt weapons welcome too (we don't judge). If you bring a weapon, we reserve the right to not allow it to be used, based on quality and design.
Please comment here with the number of people you will be bringing, and as things get closer please give us an idea of what you're bringing so we don't end up with 16 kinds of pistachio pudding...
A quick note on children... Kids are great, but we need to make sure they are being safe. Parents are REQUIRED to be present if the kids are using anything sharp. They are only allowed to touch sharp things with an approved adult present, and there will be a seperate kids area set aside so the adults have better access. For the Last two years this has seemed to work pretty well.
To be honest, this event is for the martial artists of the club first, and kids second. Kids are great, but our students err... my friends... are my focus.
For clean up, I'd appreciate folks pitching in to clean as we go and gather all the guts for eventual disposal. Mitch may take it all, and I have a friend who may take what he doesn't.
I can't wait to get cutting!
