ART EXHIBITION OPENING: JELENA TAMMISTODuring Golden Tango Weekend, we are delighted to present an exhibition by Estonian artist Jelena Tammisto, whose connection to Tallinn’s tango community runs deeper than you might imagine at first glance.
Jelena is not only a tango dancer herself. Like tango lyrics, her artwork explores the depths of human emotion: heartbreak, love and passion, loneliness and self-reflection, the masks we wear in society and with those we love, and, ultimately, the journey back to our authentic feelings and desires.
Her work draws not only on the many layers of human experience, but also on Estonian and Scandinavian myths, legends and imagery. Stepping into Jelena’s artistic world is like entering a mystical fairy tale, one that often reveals the most hidden, and sometimes darker, corners of the human soul.
A few words from Jelena herself:
I am an Estonian-born self-taught artist.
I have been drawing my whole life, through the good, the bad and the ugly days, processing romance, hope, heartbreak and renewal through lines on paper, and later, through a sequence of pixels on screen.
I find my images in the rolling of the sea waves and tossing of the tree branches, in the smile of a beautiful friend, in music, in dance.
I was privileged to dance tango under Olesya’s guidance and see the beauty and fire of this dance unfold in her graceful movements. I started the official Instagram page of the Viejo Tallinn Marathon and helped out during several Marathon iterations. Now, after a long break both from art and from tango, I feel blessed to be able to attend yet another event by the indomitable La Cumparsita Tango founder and to bring my music-inspired art to an inspiring musical event.
Exhibition details
The exhibition will be on display from 16 October to 15 November at Tam’s Chow restaurant, inside Tallinn Afro Empire.
This exhibition is a collaboration between Golden Tango Weekend, Tallinn Afro Empire and Jelena Tammisto.
The official opening will take place on Friday, 16 October, at 18:00. At approximately 18:30, Jelena will give an artist talk, sharing the stories and inspiration behind the creation of her works.
Admission is free.
