About this Event
One Thursday in June 2019, Jazzy Jazz Miyagi played two hours aboard a Kansas City streetcar, on the first car to leave Union Station after 5 pm, for Art in the Loop. The arts program called her shows "engaging and distinctly interactive," mixing jazz, blues, funk, soul, pop, and classical.
Her bio says she's known for "infusing a classically trained polish to a diverse musical catalogue," and it tells the classical side. She was born in Okinawa, Japan, studied at the New England Conservatory and later at Berklee, and continued with Lois Schafer, piccoloist of the Boston Pops and the Boston Symphony Orchestra under Seiji Ozawa. She also trained as a studio musician for film soundtracks. The same bio lists affiliations with Herbie Mann, Chaka Khan, and Joe Sample, and appearances at the Carmel Jazz Fest and the Monterey Jazz Festival.
In Kansas City, her bio says, she was chosen as a soloist for the Kauffman Center's grand opening, and she's played the Nelson art museum, 18th & Vine, and the Green Lady Lounge. At the Blue Room she's played Indigo Hour, Jazz @ Noon, and a Friday headline.
Besides the flute, she plays classical guitar, alternative flutes, and the koto.
