About this Event
JaySol's stage name is half nickname, half compliment. Everyone called her Jay, and after she sang, she says, people would tell her how soulful her voice sounded. So she added Sol.
Her mother started her singing in church at five. Her first solo was "Away in the Manger," and she remembers being terrified and doing it anyway. At Paseo Academy she studied violin, did musical theater, and joined the Thelonious Monk Jazz Institute led by Lisa Henry. When she was 16, Henry introduced her to the 18th & Vine Jazz District, and that's when she first recorded in a studio and performed on stages. At 21 she was singing in the Gospel Choir at the University of Central Missouri.
In 2017, the year she toured with American Idol runner-up La'Porsha Renae, she also sang background vocals for Howard Hewett, the lead singer of Shalamar. She released her first song, "Why," in November 2017, her first EP, Inside My Head, in March 2018, and her first album, Under The Influence, in January 2021. In 2020, by her account, she was named Kansas City's Best Female Vocalist in the 2nd Annual People's Choice Awards.
She calls herself a singer/songwriter, vocal producer, and engineer. Lately she's been showing up on other people's records: "Talk'n Jaz" with Brandon Black on Sax in the Elevator (2025), and three tracks on Resurrect The Trenches this year. In July she played Downtown KC's Summer in the City series at Oppenstein Park, and on June 5 she released her newest single, "In The Middle."
