About Mana Iwata

Mana Iwata is a Japanese tea ceremony practitioner from Gifu, Japan. She has practised the Omote-senke style tea ceremony since the age of ten, bringing nineteen years of experience to her practice.

She primarily works as a writer, focusing on tea, sustainability and Japanese crafts and traditions. She is currently developing Tsuki Musubi, a project dedicated to sharing Japanese tea culture through writing, cultural events and workshops.

Alongside this work, Mana is writing a book exploring the paradoxical freedom that can emerge through the structure and discipline of the Japanese tea ceremony, and its deeper connections with mindfulness, seasonality, and the appreciation of the present moment. https://zenbird.media/richness-in-restraint-how-the-tea-ceremony-inspires-mindful-sustainable-living/

Having first come to Edinburgh as an exchange student in 2018, Mana later completed an MSc in History at the University of Edinburgh in 2022 and has since maintained close ties with her beloved city.

She has organised tea ceremony demonstrations and helped host events across Scotland, including at the medieval abbeys of Melrose and Jedburgh, Lauriston Castle, the University of Edinburgh, and the Japanese Garden at Cowden.
